Some policemen and their families escaped being crushed to death on Monday night following the collapse of a two-story building at the Pedro Police barracks, Somolu in Lagos State.

Speaking to Punch, Faith, wife of a sergeant in the barracks, explained that the collapse was not surprising considering the dilapidated state of the barracks, while saying the collapse happened when many people were already in their sitting rooms and bedrooms, else there would have been casualties.

“The noise was so loud that the people living outside the police barracks came in to see whether an explosion had taken place. For now, some of us have started packing because we do not know which building is the next. As you can see, the state of the buildings are not different from one another," she said.

Another resident, who identified himself as Charles Averikson, called on the Federal Government to renovate the buildings in the barracks.

He said, "We want the government to come to our rescue. This building is the first victim of government’s negligence, we do not know which is the next. You know collapses are common, especially as we enter the rainy season. We thank God the building did not collapse in the morning during our bath."

OPINION: Fear Of Boko Haram, A Threat To Nigeria's Unity

The article below was an editorial written by Chukwudi Nweje on Tuesday, 1 July, 2014 for Daily Independent newspaper.

The Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, has in recent time intensified violent campaigns of daily killings, bombings, lootings and destruction of schools, homes, markets and hospitals in over 40 remote villages in the three North-Eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

In fact, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the activities of the sect have directly affected no fewer than six million residents in these three North East States of the country.

While Nigerians are desirous of defeating the sect and restoring peace and security to Nigeria, the country could suffer a backlash that would plunge the country into a crisis worse than the menace it is currently experiencing if the seemingly gradual trend towards stereotyping and ethnic profiling is not well handled.

Of late, some persons suspected of belonging to the Boko Haram sect have been arrested in some states in southern Nigeria including Lagos, Imo and other parts of the South.

The arrests of these suspected insurgents have heightened security in southern Nigeria with state governments adopting some security measures to ensure that insurgents do not infiltrate into the southern parts of the country.

One such measure is the requirement by some state governments that northerners in those parts of the country are now to carry identity cards.

However, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, has decried the requirement. Abubakar III who spoke while receiving the new Emir of Gombe in his palace in Sokoto, said the way Muslims and northerners were being tagged as fundamentalists, would not augur well for the unity of the country.

"It is indeed sad that some northerners are being suspected as terrorists and asked to move around with identity cards in some parts of the country, despite being bonafide citizens of Nigeria.
"We should not allow our people to be harassed and maltreated. This is an infringement on their individual rights as citizens and should not be so.

Shema said the five key issues that must be addressed to curb the insurgents' activities include electricity, unemployment, drug addiction, transnational crimes and the electoral process which brings about perceived injustice.
According to Shema, the insurgency facing Nigeria stems out of these five challenges which must be given serious attention, Daily Sun reports.
He explained that the task should not be left for the government to handle alone but every Nigerian should also lend a helping hand.
"Nigerians must come together. The insurgency we are seeing today must be tackled headlong. Our traditional leaders, the clergy, political leaders, and everybody, must put their heads together.
"We must cleanse our institutions, it is not about individuals. Our institutions must work, and work effectively, to ensure that this kind of thing doesn’t happen again. What is critical is that our institutions must be made to work responsibly in order for us to restore peace," Shema said.
Speaking on the plight of the Chibok girls who have been missing for close to three months now, the governor said he is personally aggrieved over the matter, describing the abduction as an inhumane act, while adding that no responsible government will sit and watch the Chibok girls kidnapping without doing something.
Shema said, "It is inhuman to cart away young girls who are struggling to acquire education, struggling to write their exams. You can see the effect of the wicked act. The entire world is coming together now to find the kidnappers but Nigeria too must rise to the occasion and do what is right."
As Boko Haram insurgents continue to wreck havoc in the nation, spreading tears, sorrow and death particularly in the North-East region, the Nigerian government is cooperating with other Foreign countries to curb terrorism in the nation.

Oshiomhole Reprimands Pastor, Says He Is Disappointed With Lackluster Effort

Governor Adams Oshiomhole has told off Ex Secretary to the State Government, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and told him to give a full report of his exploits in the office.

He said this in Government House, Benin City during a visit by over 2000 market women from 18 local governments.
He said: “I defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in all the wards and local governments in the last election and that was because of your massive support.

“After the defeat, a man who claims to be a pastor, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, insisted on being imposed on the people. I refused because I said, as a former SSG, what did you do? “What effort did you make in bringing development to our people? Did you give them electricity? Did you give them water? Did you give them good roads? “How did you influence the government in bringing development to your constituencies? Did you bring hospitals to the people?

“Everywhere I go, people ask me, why did you always allow this man to go with you? Like you have said, in the morning, you see some of them as PDP; at night they become All Progressives Congress (APC) members and how can you commit state resources to such people?”

The governor continued and revealed the dirty ppolitics some people play and then claim to be servants of the Lord.

He assured his citizens that he would not allow these thiefs to lead the state when he eventually leaves church.

He told the market women that his administration will keep on supporting them and said their relationship can be said to be like a Catholic marriage that can never be broken.
