The Judge ordered Johanson Little's bail be set at $750,000.

Abducted School Girls: Military Begs Nigerians For Prayers

photo
The military has called on Nigerians to pray for the successful release of the schoolgirls who were abducted by Boko Haram from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State during a night raid over two weeks ago.

The military spokesperson speaking during an interview said though they cannot disclose details of all their actions, they are working hard to secure the girls release and Nigerians should pray that the outcome of all their efforts yield positive results.
He explained that no information gotten about the missing girls is being ignored but rather they are being duly analysed and acted upon accordingly.

Mr Olukolade claims that a deal is “within reach” in the release of the girls, adding that the concerns and anxiety from all quarters is quite understandable.

According to reports yesterday from a U.K. based media organization, a hostage negotiator, who is in direct contact with the kidnappers had disclosed that a deal for the safe release of the girls is being finalized.

There were also reports yesterday that the girls had been split into groups and ferried to neighbouring countries where they are being married off.

Enugu Government Confiscates Aero Helicopter For Wrong Landing

An helicopter belonging to Aero Contractors was on Tuesday seized by the Enugu State government for landing at the Governor’s Lodge without approval.
photo
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity said the incident cause panic at the government house as workers scamper for safety on sighting the helicopter.

He said security operatives attached to the Government House quickly cordoned off the area and apprehended the pilots.

When contacted, Chukwudi Achife, the chief press secretary to the state Governor, Sullivan Chime, confirmed the incident.

He said that the incident occurred at about 10.30am when workers were already in their offices.
"At about 10:30am today (yesterday),  a helicopter bearing the markings of Aero Contractors landed without permission at the Governor’s Lodge. The mission of the visitors was unknown to the government. After preliminary inquiries, the chief security officer  to the governor, Mr Fidelis Ogarebe, handed the three occupants of the aircraft -two pilots and one engineer – over to the State Police Command for further investigations" he said.

Meanwhile, it was later gathered that the helicopter was meant to convey the remains of Late Sir Andrew Okonkwo Umeoji, a former member of the old Anambra state House of Assembly, whose valedictory session was held at the hallowed chamber of the Enugu State House of Assembly.
It is, however, suspected that the pilot may have mistakenly made the landing because the House of Assembly is very close to Enugu Governor’s Lodge.

Responding, Jonas Ugwuanyi, the Public Relations Officer of the State House of Assembly, said "we actually prepared ground for the helicopter to land because the family had earlier intimated us that they will either bring the corpse by helicopter to the State House of Assembly or use helicopter to convey the corpse to Anambra state. The remains eventually left by road when the session ended and there was no helicopter".

Mark Calls for Full Scale War On Insurgents

Senate president, David Mark, on Tuesday called for a full scale war against insurgents.
Senate President David Mark
Senate President David Mark
Mark, who had previously suggested dialogue with the sect members made the call after a debate on the abduction of over 200 girls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.
He noted that the insurgents should be the ones pleading for dialogue when the fight is heated, especially with the absurdity demonstrated by them in recent times.

The senate president declaration coincided with the protest by parents of the yet-to-be-found 181 girls, who stormed the National Assembly on Tuesday demanding the return of their daughters.
According to him, yesterday’s motion was the most emotional issue ever debated since his membership of the Senate in 1999.

"I have spent many years in the Senate here and I'm not sure there is any motion that has had so much emotional touch as this one. I think Ndume just managed to hold himself and the three senators who spoke also. I think the issue is not so much as to whether Boko Haram is even in the country now or not, but that 234 girls could disappear and up till now, none has been rescued. The 53 who are back escaped on their own" Mark said. "The story that Ndume narrated about soldiers going in the wrong direction when they got the information is a clear indication of what we are in for. The people we are dealing with are well trained. They are not terrorists, they are insurgents.

Photo: Murtala Nyako reacts to Gulak's sackAdamawa State governor Murtala Nyako has become one of the first officials to react to the sack of President Goodluck Jonathan's Special Adviser Ahmed Gulak.

Speaking through his director of press, the governor sympathized with the already former President's political adviser over the removal.

"But today, the real presidential spokesman has spoken by showing the exit route to him (Gulak) unceremoniously."

Adamawa leader concluded that Gulak should learn a lesson from this move, which reads that the nature of power is transient.

The truth is that when you’re focused and you know where you’re going to, you’re likely to succeed. I made up my mind then that I wasn’t going to remarry. Barcelona Coach In Hospital For Emergency Surgery

Former Barcelona coach, Tito Vilanova, who is fighting cancer, has reportedly undergone an emergency surgery at a hospital in Spain on Thursday.

According to a Spanish national radio, surgeons at Hospital Quiron in Barcelona carried out an operation on the 45-year-old Vilanova to alleviate gastric problems.

The radio station said Vilanova, who has asked the media to respect his privacy during his treatment, had been admitted to hospital April 18.

However, it was gathered that when contacted, Hospital Quiron declined to say whether Vilanova had been admitted, citing medical privacy.

As at the time of filing this report, Spanish football club Barcelona has not made any official statement concerning the report.

"The club does not comment on this matter," a spokesman for Barcelona said.

Messages of support have flooded social media network Twitter since the news broke out Thursday night.

Goalkeeper Valdes, who has announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the current campaign, appeared to be the only member of the team to make any public comment.
"Stay strong boss!" injured Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes said in a message.

Vilanova was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland more than two years ago and was forced to step down as Barca boss last July.

He was Pep Guardiola's assistant during a glorious four-year spell for Barcelona between 2008 and 2012 during which the club won 14 trophies.

Vilanova took over from Guardiola at the start of the 2012/13 season. He was forced to take four months off between December 2012 and April 2013 for treatment in the United States after a recurrence of the throat cancer which had been first diagnosed in November 2011.

Barca went onto win the Spanish La Liga title, equalling the record points tally, in his only season in charge before he finally resigned because of the cancer.

NFF denies benefiting from coaches’ salaries

General Secretary of NFF, Nigeria Football Federation, Musa Amadu, described all allegations on the fact that its officials share salaries with coaches of National Teams as fake and untrue.

Amadu stated: “I really want the persons vending these scandalous and scurrilous stories go to town with the facts available to them.”

The spokesperson of NFF, Ademola Olajire, commented on Amadu stating that he presided over what was one of the most successful Secretariat of NFF.

The statement released on Thursday stated that Amadu denied all the rumours concerning sharing of money, and stated:

*Musa Amadu
“I want to say without mincing words that nobody in the NFF, not among Members of the Executive Committee, or the Management, or Staff, or the sub-Committees, have been sharing any money with any of our Coaches.”

Amadu also encouraged anyone who is saying they have proof of that to come to town and present the proof. He claimed that all the coaches receive the allowances, salaries and bonuses according to the amount they are supposed to get. The amount of Personal Income Tax from their payments are paid directly to the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the rest is paid to the individual bank accounts of the coaches. He also added that all the paper confirming that payments are in order and may be presented for anyone to verify.

According to Amadu anyone spreading those rumors wants to derail Nigeria’s 2014 Fifa World Cup plan.

Amadu added that NFF is 100% focused on preparing the team Super Eagles for a great performance at FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil this year. “Nothing can distract us,” Amadu said.

'Slave Masters' Of Modern Nigeria Mistreat Their Workers In Calabar

How The 'Slave Masters' Of Modern Nigeria Treat Their Workers
The situation with the rights of labourers remains critical in Nigeria. The companies know that due to extreme unemployment rate the workers will not go anywhere, will not complain to anybody. Therefore, company owners use this situation to maintain their multi-million-naira salaries, while others get miserable payment, or no money at all.

One of such cases was reported to #OccupyNigeria. The 'slave masters' in a Calabar company, who record 3...5 millions of naira daily sales, 5...10 millions during festive seasons and weekends, pay their workers N12,000...N15,000 only. The other facts about the ruthless company are:
- the work day of those hired starts at 6am and finishes at about 12 midnight;

- they are also forced to return every tips Customers give them back to company management;
- the workers are not allowed to come to work with phones;
- the owners owe these people 3...6 months salaries;
- sometimes they falsely accuse the employees of theft and sack them without any pay.

Most workers resign because of such inhumane conditions. However, the company immediately finds the new ones, without payment of salary arrears to those who left.

The company is named 'De Choice Fast Food'.
Therefore, the movement urged the Government of Cross River State to start investigations of this matter.

Earlier it was reported that the DPO had been released from custody. However, the misleading information was refuted. Mr Manko stressed that neither a civilian nor a policeman who infringed the law would be covered by the command, moreover, the criminal would face the wrath of the law. Abducted Schoolgirls: Group Seeks UN Intervention

Following the non release of the secondary school girls kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State, a non-governmental organisation, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the United Nations, UN, to intervene and secure their release from their abductors.

Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni, the Executive Director of the civil society group made this plea in a statement released in Lagos on Thursday.

It could be recalled that hundreds of girls were abducted in their school on April 15 by people believed to be members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect.

The group said the continued detention of the girls had negative impact on their well-being and long-term education.

It urged the UN, through its various agencies, to provide international assistance and support to the Nigerian authorities to secure the release of the girls.

The statement reads: “We are urging these bodies to move swiftly to support efforts to protect schools, teachers, and students from deliberate attacks in the North-Eastern part of the country.

“In particular, we urge the UN Security Council’s Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism on Children and Armed Conflicts to take strong action by referring members of the Boko Haram and their backers to the International Criminal Court.

“Accountability for attacks on school children and education, including prosecuting perpetrators, is critical to deterring perpetration of crimes under international law,” the group said.
SERAP addeed that the abduction of the girls is an attack on their right to education which calls for a strong international effort.

It urged the Federal Government to specifically criminalise attacks on students and teachers, and prohibit the use of schools for military purposes.

APC Urges GEJ To Cancel Rallies Unless Missing Chibok Students Are Free

APC Urges Jonathan To Cancel Rallies

The main opposition party of Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC), wants President Jonathan to cancel the political rally in Adamawa State being scheduled for April 29, 2014, Tuesday. The APC noted the president should stay away from celebrations unless 200 abducted schoolgirls would have been rescued.

According to the statement dated April 24, 2014, Thursday, issued in Lagos by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the president must not repeat the mistake he committed less than 24 hours after the deadly Abuja bomb blast.
“The President should not repeat the same mistake, if indeed he considered that to be one. He should see the missing girls as his own daughters and stop forthwith his illegal campaign rallies.”
The APC noted that the rally of the Peoples Democratic Party would serve as a distracting factor, while there should be a concerted national effort to find the abducted girls and reunite them safely with their families.
The statement reminded that President Jonathan’s aides have linked him to Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and some other great global leaders.

“Does President Jonathan honestly believe that Mandela, in his days as President, would have been campaigning when his compatriots are being daily bombed or abducted?” Lai Mohammed asked rhetorically. The president should take time to ask himself “How Obama would have reacted to one missing girl from any school in the U.S.A., not to talk of over 200 missing girls?”.

The APC further declared that they were not calling for shutting governmental activities down. All the opposition party wants is cancellation of all the celebratory public outings and all the political campaigns, unless the crisis with missing schoolgirls is solved.

It would be added that Boko Haram sect has allegedly claimed responsibility for abduction of over 200 female students in Borno States, threatened to kill all of the hostages if the search and rescue operation would not be stopped.

IYC Warns NYSC Against Sending Ijaw Youths To Northern States

IYC Warns NYSC Against Sending Ijaw Youths To Northern States

The controversy on the issue whether the youths from the South should be sent to northern part of Nigeria for service has been sparked again as the result of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide appeal.

The IYC made the call in the capital city of Bayelsa State, Yenagoa, on April 24, 2014, Thursday. The group urged the leaders of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to put a ban on sending Ijaw youths for service in the North.

The Ijaw organisation also lamented that the current rise of insecurity was being stage-managed by the northern stakeholders, who intended to discredit the president and his development program.
According to them, the activities of Boko Haram Islamist sect cannot be tolerated, however, the lives of Ijaw people may not be scarified in the interests of the North.

IYC spokesperson, Mr Eric Omare, has also called on the Council of Legal Education and the military authorities to stop posting lawyers and soldiers from Ijaw extraction to the North-East.

It would be noted that despite the state of Emergency Rule 820 corps members were this year deployed to Borno for the three weeks orientation course at Malam-Sidi Orientation Camp. The State Government of the neighbouring Yobe on March 13, 2014, promised an adequate security and logistics to the new-comers.

Officials of the Abuja Development Control backed by a team of soldiers and air force men, yesterday went on a beating spree in the FCT, harassing motorists and marking their cars with red paint for alleged wrong parking.

The notice on the marked vehicles reads, “You are advised to stop parking your vehicle at non-designated location(s) within the Federal Capital City failing which appropriate sanctions will be imposed on any defaulter. There will be no compensation for defacement or damages to any vehicle in the course of enforcement.”

One of the defaced cars
This is coming after an Abuja high court last week ruled as illegal, the ‘Park and Pay’ scheme operated by the FCTA and the scheme was suspended by the FCT minister Bala Mohammed following the court judgement.

At O.P. Fingesi street, in Utako, a man taking pictures of the enforcement activities was brutalized by the soldiers for doing so.

According to an eyewitness, another man taking pictures of the team defacing parked vehicles from a balcony of one of the houses on the street was forcefully ejected from his house by the soldiers. He was dragged to the street and beaten up while his phone was smashed.

The Development Control Department then went on seal the building thus preventing other tenants entry.

Another victim, Emmanuel Inah, a staff of  Empire Energy was rushed to the hospital for treatment after the severe beating he got for attempting to clean up one of the vehicles defaced with red paint. He was saved by a lady who got in between him and the soldiers to stop further beating.

Residents in Utako and Jabi districts however wondered why the military is involved in operations that are purely the duties of the police.

Ex-Army Chief Proffers Solution To Boko Haram

Former Chief of Army Staff, General Salihu Ibrahim has proffered a solution to the unabated destruction of lives and property being perpetrated by the Boko Haram insurgency in the country.

According to the one time Nigerian army boss, community policing is the best way to curb the problem of insurgency in the north eastern part of the country.

The chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Shippers Council, NSC told Vanguard reporter in Lagos that all communities must cooperate with the security agencies to stop the destruction of lives and property in the country.

Ibrahim also implored residents in the north-eastern part of the country to ensure that they give useful information about strangers and unusual activities around their communities to the security agencies.

He said: "There is need to re-emphasise and educate the public more to pass on information about any unforeseen or unjust activities going on around them and if there are people, strangers in their midst, they should report such people to the police and the security agencies for clarification. Those in the villages must help in identifying who the bad guys are.

"The government is doing very well in trying to tackle the unfortunate security situation in our country.

"I think it seems to be diverting attention and eroding efforts of government and the people themselves, particularly in areas where these things are happening. Government must mobilise the public."
