Kayode Fayemi is the APC gubernatorial candidate while Ayodele Fayose is the PDP flag bearer in the 2014 Governorship election slated for June. Fayemi needs the debate to demonstrate that the level of education and academic standards in the state are higher than it was alleged by Fayose.

Earlier the ex-governor claimed that education had not improved in the state since he assumed office 4 years ago. He expressed regrets that the standard had declined saying the state now occupied 35th out of the 36 states in the country.

Contrary to Fayose’s allegation that the state was ranked 8th in WAEC ranking, Fayemi noted that his administration improved not only the level of students’ performances in external examinations but also the welfare of the teaching stuff. He also highlighted that he knew the value of education as he worked hard to get his Doctor of Philosophy degree.

The Governor offered Fayose to visit the West African Examinations Council’s office to see the progress achieved by the state in recent years. He stressed that during Fayose's administration teachers were earning N7,500 minimum wage.

Presently there are rural teachers’ and core subjects allowances, moreover, capacity building programme are developing. According to Fayemi, the state had moved from the position of 217 on the web metric ranking to 17 in the entire country. During the debate he would like to compare the accomplishments that he and Fayose made during their administrations not in words but in real facts.
