The presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muhammadu Buhari has paid ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar a visit days after the latter lost his presidential bid to the former.
It is unknown what both politicians discussed at the closed-door meeting at Atiku’s Abuja residence.
General Buhari visited alone with just his orderly and driver while all Atiku’s aides were asked to stay away as the two chieftains talked behind closed-doors.
Meanwhile a source in the ex-vice-president’s camp said “the APC presidential candidate came to seek the support and collaboration of Atiku in line with the former VP’s pledge to work for the success of the APC in the general elections”.
“It is also possible that they may have discussed the choice of Buhari’s VP consideration ahead of the meeting by the party tomorrow on the subject in Abuja,” the source added.
Another source close to the visit told journalists that it was part of the efforts to work for the victory of the party ahead the 2015 election.
“As you can see, APC leaders are forging ahead after the primaries. Buhari is here to meet with the Turaki Adamawa for the way forward.
“In the next few days, APC will surprise all. That is what I can tell you for now,” a source said.
Before Buhari’s visit, a leader of the APC and former Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Ogbonnaya Onu, and Lawal Shuaibu, party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), had also visited ex-vice-president.
Their aim to Atiku’s house is also uncertain.
General Buhari beat polled 3,430 of 7,214 votes cast while Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano unexpectedly placed second with 974. Atiku Abubakar polled 954, Governor Rochas Okorocha had 624 and Sam Nda-Isaiah done with a paltry 10 votes.
Earlier the APC National Convention, the presidential aspirants had promised to support whoever emerge as presidential candidate, possibly the reason why Buhari and some leaders of the party, paid Atiku a visit at his Asokoro residence.
