Boat Mishap In Majidun, Lagos, Claims 6 Lives, 22 Rescued

  • 6 Feared Dead, 22 Rescued In Another Boat Disaster In Lagos
About six people feared dead, while 22 others rescued by local divers after a wooden boat capsized in a lagoon in the Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, in the evening of April 3, 2014, Wednesday evening.
According to The Punch, the boat carried work class people who were heading home.
“I was told that a boat with about 28 passengers fell off a boat on Wednesday evening. Some of the victims were said to have been dressed formally and were returning after the day’s work,” an undisclosed source reported.
Rescue officials said community members confirmed the incident, though some details still remain sketchy.
The spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South-West zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed during a telephone conversation, about 9.45 pm, that 22 people had been recovered from the water, while six remained unaccounted for.
“NEMA officials along with men of the Nigerian Navy and the marine policemen officials of the National Inland Waterways Authority are patrolling the water in a bid to recover bodies,” he added.
It would be recalled that boat mishap at the 4th Avenue, 42 Road, Festac Town, in March 2014 claimed about 18 lives. Lagos State Waterways Authority has put a ban on night rides on water following that tragedy.
