Nigerians React To Buhari Pulling Out Of Presidential Debate

It was revealed today that All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, will not participate in the presidential debate organised by the Broadcast Organisation of Nigeria (BON).

Garba Shehu, director of media and publicity of the APC presidential campaign organisation, said the boycott was due to the “unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by some key organisers of the programme, against the corporate political interest of the party (APC) and its candidates”.

The views expressed below do not reflect the views of Naij.com, but of simple Nigerian citizens.
Mr Ayo Dee wrote through his twitter handle: “Only a frontrunner can shun a debate and not suffer at the polls, unfortunately for Buhari, the front runner is GEJ.

“Also, Can anyone blame Buhari for boycotting the Presidential debate? Who wants to see him mumble incoherently for 60 mins?”

One anonymous blogger wrote: “This man should just do us all a favour and step down. If you can’t debate with the so-called ‘clueless’ GEJ, how do you intend to tackle the intellectually tasking and complex demands of running a democratic country?

“If he suspects any form of connivance, he should suggest that a more trusted body handle the debates. APC and co have been asking the PDP to forget the certificate issue and face real matters. Now the time to face real matters is upon us and they’re looking for an escape route.”

Another wrote on one of Nigeria’s most popular forums: “The Chairman, Board of trustees of NEDG is also the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Mr. Sola Omole.

“You only need to watch a little bit of NTA recently to know their level of bias and partisans.
“APC are not attending your useless debate if it can’t be organised by a neutral body.”

One George Nwokoro wrote: “Stupid apc supporters,if ur candidate can defend his party policy if elected,he should come out and tell us,during campaign he said he will do this and that, yes this the time Nigerians are saying come and defend ur policy,he has no reason to back out,as a party that has been singing songs of change come out and defend the type change u meant for apc people because I no there is no positive change in him,u apc people said he should not respond to ait tv expository show on buhari and he didn’t yes cause he is guilty as charge, now u guys are saying he should not go for debate, and the same u idiot apc are talking democracy what’s democracy with out presidential public debate, shame to buhari is clearer that u did nt finish secondary school, even after ur service u shld ve gone back to school,is a shame that u are nt agent personal development or improvement”
Another anonymous supporter went back in time to dig out some evidence against Jonathan:

“Jonathan ran away from the presidential debate for not getting EXPO (the questions before the Debate)
2011 debates
“He had a very shameful counter debate with dbanj (who was not contesting the 2011 election)
2011 debates 2
“What Jonathan did with Dbanj was a big disgrace, so he went ahead to debate himself alone on National TV”
2011 debates 3
While one, Nmeri wrote: “lol. all this one you people are blowing is grammar. warri people have a proverb that says ‘he who fights and run away, na fear dey catch am’
“its even better he doesn’t show up so he doesn’t make things more difficult for his loyalists”

The APC has asked Nigerians not to see the boycott of the debate as disrespectful, but as an honourable right not to consent to any activity that could distract, demean, denigrate or derail the fast-moving train of the party
