Marwa, Gulak, Others Battle For PDP Ticket In Adamawa

Reports coming in from Adamawa, northern Nigeria, suggest that ten stalwarts of the of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, have so far showed interest for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

According to finding made by the PUNCH on Sunday, 10 August, 2014, in Abuja, it was gathered that those who have indicated interest included a former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Maj. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.); a former Senator representing Adamawa Central, Abubakar Girei; a former Political Adviser to the President, Ahmed Gulak, and a former minister, Idi Hong..

Others include Dr. Umar Ardo, Dr. Ahmed Modibo, Mr. Markus Gundiri and the son of a former PDP National Chairman, Mr. Awual Tukur.

A source also informed that the Acting Governor, Bala Ngilari is also under pressure from 13 of his colleagues from the state House of Assembly to contest for the governorship position.

A top PDP member in Adamawa told newsmen that the party would consider a lot of factors before picking a candidate for the election.

The source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said, “As you are aware, the PDP has always been the party of choice in Adamawa State.

“Whosoever is going to fly our flag must be a loyal party member, who enjoys the confidence of not only the party leadership but also the people. We cannot repeat the mistake we made with Nyako. Party leaders are resolute that this time around, only loyal and tested members will be selected to fly the party flag at all levels.”

It was also gathered that aspirants such as Girei, Gundiri, Hong and Modibo, who hail from the Central Senatorial zone, are urging the PDP to consider ceding the governorship ticket to the zone because it remains the only zone which has not produced a governor since the creation of the state.
Available records indicate that the northern zone has ruled the state thrice while the south has done the same four times.

Meanwhile, it was also learnt that a PDP leader, who enjoys President Goodluck Jonathan’s confidence, held a meeting with Adamawa PDP stakeholders in his Asokoro residence last Thursday.
A source privy to the meeting said, “He told them clearly that the party would not support the candidature of Tukur’s son, neither would it support a candidate whose loyalty has been called to question at any time.”

It would be recalled that the former governor of Adamawa,

Speaking recently on what were his plans for the people of Adamawa if he is elected to govern the state,
“Adamawa State is like comatose after Nyako’s administration. It is half-dead and it needs a Marwa to resuscitate it and bring it back to where it belongs.

The roads that I did in Lagos like 700, we will double it in Adamawa if not more by the grace of God. The water supply, the most difficult area in the country is Borno State, I was governor there and I did over 1,000 boreholes and wells there. Agriculture, fishery jobs for the youth. We will work for the PDP and the people.
