“The essence of the law is to streamline and avoid excesses of finances and to be prudent in the management of our resources. The Constitution has empowered us to make laws. So, we have today made the pension law for ex-governors and ex-deputy governors.

“This law was made in 2000. It was amended in 2006 and is now amended again in 2014. The essence of this amendment was because staff such as cooks, drivers, among others were hired by the ex-governors and ex-deputy governors with a non-financial benchmark” Akpabio said. “All staff of the ex-governors should not earn more than N5 million annually and all staff of the ex-deputy governors should not earn more than N2 million annually. No ex-governor can spend more than N100 million in a year for medical expenses and no ex- deputy governor can spend more than N50 million for medical expenses, because we are making sure that we cover all the loopholes of financial wastage. Widows of ex-governors will receive a minimum of N1 million monthly for medical expenses and N500,000 medical expenses for the widows of ex-deputy governors” he added.

China - A 70-year-old Chinese man married his 113-year-old sweetheart after courting her for six months.

Aimti Ahemti does not seem to care about the 43-year age gap between himself and his wife Azatihan Sawuti. The two met in December 2013 at the nursing home in Bachu County, China's western Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

Aimti says she takes good care of him and even shares her meals with him.

When he proposed to her for the first time, she refused, obviously embarrassed by her own old age. But, Aimti says, he started to chase her "like a young man" and eventually persuaded her to accept the proposal in April.

Soldiers Of Nigerian Army Narrate About Current Hardships

The soldiers of the Nigerian Army, who are deployed in the most dangerous part of the country, have spoken again on operational inefficiency and hardships of their deployment. They also emphasized the easiest way to increase the morale of the personnel was to solve the issue of unpaid allowances.

In an interview with SaharaReporters the military men spoke about lack of troops to monitor and patrol such critical areas as Nigeria-Chad border and the notorious Sambisa Forest. The members of Boko Haram sect are especially active in these locations of Borno State.

The soldiers further complained about the weaponry. First of all, in most cases they have to face heavily-armed Boko Haram fighters with just Kalashnikov (AK-47) rifles and some magazines only. Troops need support from the air, as well as on the ground, by battle tanks and armoured personnel carriers. In several missions it had never come, or come too late.

Speaking about personal protection such as helmets and bullet-proof vests, the soldiers revealed that in many cases they had been pierced, scattered by Boko Haram bullets. This can be an indication of poor quality of purchased materiel. In many cases the insurgents conducted successful operation in the night because they were carrying night vision equipment, which gave them superiority. Getting personal night vision goggles for a Nigerian soldier is a faraway dream.

Islamic Group Reacts To Fake Boko Haram Attack in Osun

Prof Ishaq Akintola, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Director and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the Lagos State University (LASU), on Thursday condemned an attempt by some Christians of Baptist Church in Ikonifin, Osun State, to launch a disguised Boko Haram attack on a church by its members.
People running for safety

Speaking in Lagos on the incident, Akintola said, the action which reportedly caused pandemonium in the church was carried out through the use of bangers, which were thrown at worshippers.

The Islamic group said the incident led to the injuries of several worshippers.

MURIC further revealed that the assailants were masked in order to conceal their identification.
The don pointed out that this was the time for all Nigerians to join hands together to curb the menace of terrorism instead of some evil spirited persons among Christians to be faking a Boko Haram attack.

The Islamic scholar reiterated that the Muslim organisations, Sultan of Sokoto, the President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, have condemned the activities of Boko Haram and dissociated Islam from the sect’s killings and destruction.

“It is, however, sad to note that in spite of this all-round rejection of the renegade group by Muslims, a large section of the Christian community, some sections of the Nigerian security agencies and a section of the Nigerian press still treat mainstream Muslims in the country either as active members of Boko Haram, sympathisers of the group or their accomplices” Prof Akintola said. “A good example of these fantastic Christians is the Pastor of the Baptist Church, Ikonifin, Osun State, who attempted to launch a false Boko Haram (attack) in the state.

Chibok Girls: Chukwumerije Blasts CDS For Disclosing Military Secret

Senator Uche Chukwumerije, Chairman, Senate Committee on Education has condemned the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, for revealing that the military has located where the over 234 Chibok girls that were kidnapped on April 14 by Boko Haram is being held captive.
Senator Uche Chukwumerije
*Senator Uche Chukwumerije
Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, Chukwumerije insisted that such information should have remained a classified military secret.

The senator, who personally blamed Badeh for disclosing what the military considered as a secrete to the public said: “I am very much elated by the news that the location of our girls is now known to the army. But like the rest of the nation, especially observers, I am puzzled by one phrase, according to the military spokesman; their location is a military secret.

“Now what puzzles me is simply this: why do you make public what you consider a military secret? As you are announcing the location or your discovery of the location of these girls, the news is being known to those holding them captive.
“And you think they are going to stay there and wait for you until you come to locate the girls and take them away?

“This puzzles me because we know in all American military operations you don’t hear a word about that until after their mission is accomplished.

“The next you will hear is that their mission has been accomplished. When the leader of Al Qaeda was dealt with, we know how it was done.

“Nobody even had a wind of what was going on until it was completed. So, let us hope and pray that if the news of the location of the girls is true that the enemy is not sufficiently warned to move before our men would strike” Chukwumerije said.

Senator Victor Ndoma – Egba, the Senate Leader also pleaded with the Islamist sect members to free the abducted Chibok girls in the spirit of the Children’s Day.
Meanwhile, the over 234 kidnapped female students have been in captivity for over 40 days now.

Nigeria Without Entertainers

They sometimes leave you hanging. Most often, you’re rattled and ranting. You occasionally cheer and you’re quick to jeer them too.
They bring you smiles and frowns. But, they’re worth it.
Nigerian Artistes

In the facing of our unending national woes, our entertainers seem to be our only ray of hope. Arguably, they’re the only good news coming out from the shores of the most populous black nation on earth.

To the right is Nollywood, and maybe for starters too. Nollywood has grown into amazing world record beaters. From relative obscurity to the world’s finest success story. An aside, Nollywood may as well be showing our uninspiring leaders the way to travel. And it is not hard to see. Granted, Nollywood may be filled with anything but professionalism, it has given the world some of its finest talent in the movie world. From the amiable Genevieve Nnaji, the delectable Omotola Jalade Ekeinde to the refreshing Ramsey Nouah, among others. There’s no denying that Nollywood remains one of Nigeria’s biggest export.

The decision was brought to fore on Tuesday by a delegate representing civil organisations, Mallam Naseer Kura, during his contribution on the report of the Committee on Religion.

Kura pointed out that religious leaders were making so much money and needed to be taxed for it, adding that most pastors own private jets and universities at the expense of the people.

Kura insisted that with the amount of money that most religious leaders make in the country, they ought to pay tax to the government.

Responding, Mr. Isaac Ighure, a delegate representing the Nigeria Guild of Editors also noted that pastors and heads of churches made too much money not to pay tax, and stressed that they should be compelled to pay their tax in order for the elite to stop abusing the poor in the society.

"Some people buy private jets when people in their churches are suffering and living in abject poverty, they should be made to pay taxes" he said.

When the matter was put to vote, the delegates in unison voted ‘yes’ in support of the motion that religious bodies should pay taxes.

In another development, the conference also passed the recommendation that government should stop sponsoring its officials on any pilgrimage, and also not to spend public funds in carrying out religious pilgrimages for any category of citizens as well as government functionaries.

Lagos Deserves Better Than Ikuforiji

Following Governor Babatunde Fashola's stellar achievements in Lagos State, both critics and lovers of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) have intensely debated who is capable of succeeding him when he leaves office next year.
Ikuforiji Adeyemi, Lagos Speaker
*Ikuforiji Adeyemi, Lagos Speaker
For residents of the state, any successor who fails to continue and build on the Fashola Legacy would mark a return to the military era 'business as usual' in Lagos; and thus destroy the APC's enviable support in the state. Among those widely seen as contenders for the seat is Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly; a man that epitomises 'business as usual'.
With his ongoing trial for money laundering and details of his criminal convictions in the USA revealed, one would expect Mr Ikuforiji to shelve his ambition to be governor and leave the state's political arena entirely. However, going by his Machiavellian methods in returning to the House even when his constituency, Epe, rejected him in 2011, Mr Ikuforiji believes anything is possible.

Pick 23 Players After Game Against Scotland - NFF Advises Keshi

photo - Pick 23 Players After Game Against Scotland - NFF Advices Keshi
Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) said manager of Super Eagles Stephen Keshi to pick the final list of 23 players after tomorrow’s friendly match against Scotland in London.

Going by Keshi’s own plans, the final 23-man squad won't be revealed until June 2, which is the deadline given by FIFA for all the participating countries to submit their final list.

An anonymous top NFF official said yesterday, May 26, that the proper thing to do is for Keshi to name his squad after the Scotland game since the Eagles won’t play any other friendly or even have any meaningful training outside the London outing before the FIFA deadline of June 2nd.

“We have advised the coach (Keshi) to name his final squad in London. And the reason for this directive is very simple. The match against Scotland is the only one before June 2nd. So there won’t be any other opportunity for him to observe the players after that game. It won’t make economic sense taking the entire team of 30 players to USA only to decamp seven the next day.

The Eagles will leave London on the 29th, arrive USA on the 30th and commence training on the 31st, so why take 30 players to USA when we must send the final list to FIFA on the 2nd., two days after arriving USA,” a source stated.

However, it is not clear if Keshi will heed the NFF's directive or jet out to US with his 30 man army of players after playing Scotland.
