Friends who found the remains of a poor girl said that her face was ‘smashed beyond recognition’. During police investigation more horrific details emerged – the girl was repeatedly beaten with bricks and stones and later strangled to death.

A friend who found Miss Khan dead said, “I was walking home through the fields when I saw a body lying on the ground. It was covered in blood and when I looked at the face it was so badly damaged I didn’t recognise it as Pratibha’s. It was only later that I learnt who it was and I was simply horrified.”

In a bid to cover their crime and hide the girl’s identity two men inflicted even more serious injuries on a dead body. When detained and questioned they tried to slander the girl’s lover, saying it was he who murdered Pratibha.

Later police analyzed the girl’s mobile phone records that pointed to the brother and father’s involvement to the homicide.  Eventually father Jagpal, 65, and oldest brother Pradeep, 36, admitted the killing.

An honor killing is the homicide of a member of a family in Islamic culture by other members, due to the perpetrators’ belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family or has violated the principals of Islam.
