Primary Schools To Resume In Benue State After Eight Months Of Closure

Latest reports coming out of Benue State indicate that public primary schools in the state would finally resume full academic activities on Monday, 7 July, 2014, after eight months of closure.

It could be recalled that teachers of government-owned primary schools in Benue state embarked on strike eight months ago to demand payment of the minimum wage as being enjoyed by other workers.

According to a report by Daily Trust, Benue State chairman of NUT, Godwin Anya, told newsmen in Makurdi on Tuesday, 1 July, 2014 that public primary schools would re-open on 7 July, “following the resolution of the matter between the national body and state government in Abuja a few days ago”.

It was gathered from Anya that the government would pay the teachers two months salaries out of what they are being owed before the end of this week based on old rate, after which it will commence implementation of the minimum wage.

“We are resuming on July 7, because the state government has acceded to our demands. We hope they will honour the agreement,” he said.

Strikes by teachers or lecturers are not strange in Nigeria.
Only few months ago, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, called off their strike after almost a year of academic in-activities in Nigerian universities.

Also, lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics under the umbrella Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, are currently on strike.

Among what ASUP is demanding from the Federal Government are improved working conditions of polytechnic lecturers, improved salary packages for lecturers and more infrastructures in polytechnics in Nigeria.

In spite of series of negotiation with the Federal Government, as at the time of compiling this report, ASUP is yet to call off their strike while Nigerian polytechnic students continue to stay at home.
