Speaking with Punch correspondent Joe Igbokwe, the All Progressive Congress (APC) Interim Publicity Secretary recalled the experience of other countries in similar negotiations, mentioning Israel and Palestine.
He was quoted as saying:
"In war situations, prisoner exchange is very common. It is an international convention."
He criticized those who urged the Federal Government not to indulge into the exchange negotiations, adding that it is because "their children are not among the kidnapped girls".
This idea was also supported by the founder of the Oodua People’s Congress and the National Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, who stated:
"When nations declare war, they still look for a means of negotiation. In the past, Boko Haram was not going to negotiate, they were just killing people. But we do not know what has come over them to initiate negotiations."
According to the official, the exchange of the abducted girls for Boko Haram militants is the best idea left for Nigeria to bring the girls back.
It would be recalled that on Tuesday the authorities expressed readiness to negotiate with Boko Haram sect on the release of kidnapped GGSS Chibok female students. However, the first reaction of the government was categorical rejection of the suggested deal.
