The Senator representing Borno Central, Ahmed Zannah, debunks the recent reports that Bama was won by the military.
In a telephone interview to Punch the officials said that the town was under control of insurgents.
“Like I said yesterday, Bama is in the hands of Boko Haram, nothing has changed today. The Borno State Government is trying to play politics with the issue. I don’t know if they are trying to appease the military or the Federal Government. Even this morning, the two kids of my brother were killed. Anybody telling you that Boko Haram is not in control of Bama is telling a lie. Many people were killed in the fighting; I don’t know the number because there is no access to the place. Some of those who died have not even been buried yet.”
Earlier reports
The battle for the strategic town started yesterday when the terrorists launched daring attacks in the town in the attempt to expand the so-called “Caliphate”. The territorial ambitions of the insurgents generate from the recent video released by the sect leader Abubakar Shekau, who declared captured Gwoza part of Islamic Caliphate.
According to today’s reports, the situation in Bama has been changing
with extreme dynamics. Initially it was made known that Boko Haram
insurgents took over the town having injured many soldiers, killing several.
However hours later it was reported that the Nigerian army began airstrikes in the town urging its residents to leave their homes ahead of the upcoming military operation.
Punch provided with reference to its security source that the intensity of the air attacks on the insurgents helped soldier to force militants out of the town, with Boko Haram fighters massing on the outskirts of Bama considering another attack.
The source added that troops and militants were still exchanging fire despite the fact that insurgents had been pushed out of Bama.
It would be recalled that according to the recently gathered intelligence Boko Haram were plotting to seize Maiduguri and were gathering weapons and militants in the near-city areas to launch the attacks, but the military insisted that they were ready to repel any such attack and to “defend Maiduguri”.
