The Leadership newspaper reports online that this comes barely 24
hours after President Goodluck Jonathan had campaigned in Ondo State.
According to former senatorial aspirant, Jide Ipinsagba, who is the leader of the defectors, they decided to dump the PDP because of the injustice in the party.
Ipinsagba, speaking at a press conference in Ikare-Akoko on Tuesday, lamented the rate at which people were leaving the PDP since Governor Mimiko joined the party in October last year.
He alleged that old members of the PDP in the state no longer have a sense of belonging in the affairs of the party except what the governor imposes on them.
“We leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party in Akoko North East Local Government Area and over 5000 teeming supporters are moving from a deadly party to a progressive party.
“We are leaving PDP to for APC to restore the glory and ensure the development of our area and our people. Not only the people of Akoko are tired of the current trends in Ondo state and Nigeria at large but every right thinking person,” Ipinshagba said.
It is reported that the defectors were received into the APC by the
opposition party’s state chairman, Hon Isaac Kekemeke, and its other
leaders.
Meanwhile, there is controversy in the state over who are the authentic PDP candidates for the forthcoming elections.
The state’s PDP chapter has been polarised into old and new factions since Governor Mimiko joined the party in October last year.
Disagreement over a sharing formula proposed by the governor led to the conduct of parallel primaries by the two factions, resulting in the emergence of two sets of candidates for next month’s elections.
Abuja Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Adeniyi Ademola, on December 18, 2014, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept the list of candidates submitted by the Dr Olu Ogunye-led executive committee of the party.
The INEC, however, violated the court’s order and published the list of candidates submitted by the Clement Faboyede-led executive committee on December 26.
The submission of the list of candidates in contravention of the court’s order prompted the Ogunye-led executive on December 30, to file contempt charges against the INEC and the PDP National Executive Committee before another Abuja court.
Investigations revealed that most PDP candidates in the state have not started their campaign. They were said to be waiting for the court to determine the authentic flag bearers of the party in the elections.
Prospective voters who spoke with National Mirror said they were confused, since they did not know who they would be voting for among the two sets of candidates produced by the PDP.
