A daughter of Nigerian business and oil mogul Femi Otedola, DJ Cuppy, was named a Tourism Ambassador for Nigeria by the Minister for Culture and Tourism, Edem Duke, on April 17, 2014, Thursday.
Many Nigerians are not happy with the new development. They want to know why the 21-year-old daughter of Nigerian billionaire (real name Ife Otedola) has been chosen for the position, with many others clearly stating their disapproval.
“On Behalf Of The Ministry Of Culture, Tourism, And National Orientation… I Am So Honoured and Proud To Be Officially Dressed As A Tourism Ambassador For The Federal Republic Of Nigeria #ilovemycountry,” Cuppy wrote on her Instagram page as she posted photos of her visit to the Abuja office. While her friends and fans have showered her with praise, readers of a number of popular blogs who reported the story have lambasted Otedola and her dad, stating that the title is unmerited and was only given to her because of her father’s affluence and well known status quo in the country:
“Lmao really? Oh wow… enough said. What does she know about tourism though? In Nigeria anything can definitely happen lol,” Bimpe wrote on Bella Naija.
“I like to be happy with people who are achieving things just as I am for this DJ, however, I can’t stop thinking of what the criteria for selection was and how she was the best person that was picked for it,” Ola asked.
“Absolutely ridiculous!! Someone please explain to me how a ‘DJ’ has any merits with a Tourism position?! She needs to focus on the turntables and leave this position for someone who actually has the applicable degree and experience! This is exactly why Nigeria will never progress! You offer someone a position, simply because they are the ‘sons/daughters’ of SOMEBODY! Nigeria is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, there is no reason why Nigeria has not developed into a tourist country with all our resources! That could bring us an additional source of GDP!!,” Khloe wrote.Already holding a Bachelor’s degree, DJ Cuppy will be furthering her education by pursuing a Master’s Degree as she recently gained admission into the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York.
DJ Cuppy who made her music debut in Nigeria last year has made the conscious effort of flying the Nigerian flag proud (as seen on her social media time lines), always using the hashtag #ilovemycountry. Cuppy’s biography might however just contradict everything Nigerian she stands for, as she described herself as ‘British’.
