The students’ association took to the streets of Lagos, today,
Monday, February 9, 2015 to protest the decision of the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) to shift the elections to next
month.
The students in their hundreds stormed the office of the Lagos state governor in Alausa, Ikeja, to express their views, and have now said that they will hold a mock election on Saturday, 14 February, 2015, and make the result of the public.
Yakub Eleto, a life member of the association, told our correspondent that, “we the Association of Nigerian Students are against the postponement of the election. This is a move to make mockery of our democracy and heat the polity. We will not accept any of that.
“Therefore, we are saying a blatant No to election postponement and that is why we have staged a peaceful protest here today, to tell our Governor that we are not in support of the election postponement.
“As a matter of fact, we are going to hold a mock election on Saturday, 14 February and the winner of the election shall be made public.
The union leader, however, encouraged his colleagues to ensure they
obtained their Permanent Voters Cards, (PVCs) with which they will vote
for their desired candidates.
“All Nigerian students should ensure they get their PVCs and come out en masse to vote on the election day. They cannot disenfranchise us no matter how they try. INEC has been a huge disappointment with the shift of date,” he noted.
At the time of filing this report, no political office holder had addressed the students. See the photos of the protest below:
In another recent development, the national vice-president, external, of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Tosin Ogunkuade, was arrested on the orders of Governor Ayo Fayose for addressing a crowd during the presidential campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
