Keshi had taken Nigeria to its third African Cup of Nations win in 2013 where they defeated Burkina faso in the final.
However the Eagles failed to qualify and defend their title in 2015, losing their spot to South Africa and Congo.
The NFF has however failed to resolve their contract dispute with Keshi, this affected the Eagles qualification to the 30th edition of the AFCON.
He explained that retaining the title if Nigeria had managed to qualify will depend on preparation and subsequently the players’ state of mind and what their motivation is.
” It depends on how Nigeria prepares before the tournament and the ambitions of the players. Questions must be asked and answers provided, such as, do they want to defend and win? There are a lot of things that go with playing and winning. We could have made an impact if we were there though.”
On Sunday, Ivory Coast will face off against Ghana who last night defeated hosts, Equitorial Guinea by 3-0.
