It was gathered from an eyewitness, Solomon Okonta that a Julius Berger Nigeria Plc van in a convoy of three Toyota Hilux pick-up vans killed two children at Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

At about 3.30pm, the children were waiting to cross the busy Calabar-Ikom Highway on their way home from church after the Sunday service when the van, with number plate, Abuja RBC 702 XA, which was in a convoy rammed into them.

A mob then descended on the occupants of the van, mercilessly beating the driver and a foreigner.
If not for the timely intervention of the police, they would have been lynched.

Okonta said the driver was later taken to the police station, while the foreigner was taken to a church in the area for refuge.

The DPO of Ugep division later led his men to restore peace in the area.
He said, "The problem we faced was how to rescue the white man. We had problem of lack of patrol van and none of the officers was ready to use their private vehicle to where angry youths were. So, it took us a while to disperse them."

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer in charge of the Cross River State Police Command, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said the situation had been brought under control and investigation was ongoing.
