INSECURITY: Lagos Residents Cry Out Over Abandoned Buildings

Following the wave of insecurity, kidnapping and acts of terrorism being perpetrated by some unscrupulous elements and the Boko Haram insurgents across the country, residents in Lagos State have expressed their concerns over the alarming rate of abandoned buildings within the state and its environs.

The increasing rate of uncompleted construction projects in Lagos State has not only become an issue of concern for Lagos residents but also Non-Government Organisations, NGOs.

Investigations carried out within Lagos suggest that not only individuals abandon building projects but also the state, local, federal governments and corporate firms.

When walking through the Lagos metropolis, it is not uncommon to sight gigantic building projects abandoned by government parastaltals, individuals or corporate firms.

The security risks posed by these uncompleted buildings have however caused some Lagos residents to plan to stage a protest against the act of abandoning building constructions within the state and its environs.

Mrs Ayotukun Olaniyi, the convener of Coalition for Communist Progressive, CCP, while speaking at her Ikeja Office recently, she informed that the NGO has completed plans to stage a protest against contractors, governments and firms who would start a housing project and abandoned them mid-way.

She stated: “Our attention has been drawn to the excessive and careless rate at which our government and some business individuals are being reckless in-terms of uncompleted project execution and wasteful land acquisition in Lagos state as it affects law abiding citizens of the state.
“The negative effects of these abandoned projects have made it compelling for us as a peace loving movement to consult and consolidate with the government to find a modality and address the issue of abandoned projects within Lagos State.

While commenting on the security challenges posed by these abandoned building on residents of Lagos, Mrs Olaniyi stated that: “Our records hold that 70% of vicious crimes committed by miscreants in Lagos are carried out in an uncompleted building.

“As an organisation concerned with welfare of Lagos residents, we have dealt with over 216 rape cases which were committed in uncompleted constructions within Lagos.

“And from police reports made available to us, it has been discovered that about 119 out of 316 arrested suspected criminals were picked from uncompleted building which are usually situated within residential areas.

“In this vein, as a progressive movement, we shall stage an awareness protest to alert the Lagos State government of the risks that Lagosians are liable to, due to the accumulating and increasing numbers of abandoned sky-scrappers and other type of building.

“We would also sensitize Lagosians to always alert the police whenever they suspect any form of strange movement around their residence to prevent evil doers from using abandoned buildings around them to perpetrate evil.”

Mr Elufidipe Dapo, 31, a Banker at Agege also condemned the rate at which building agents start and abandon construction projects these days.
According to him, “the rate at which you see uncompleted building in Lagos today is becoming appalling.

“In my Area in Ayobo, out of every 5 building apart, there would be about 2 to 3 uncompleted building. Most times, in the early hours of the night, we hear strange noises coming out of those building.

“By the time you wake up the following day to check around, you would see several pack of used condoms and blood stains on the floor of those building but no one would come out to say he saw the victim neither would anyone come out to complain of being the victim.
“This means that those criminals usually pick their victims from far away to mishandle them wherever an uncompleted building is available.”

Mr Amos Akintayo, a contactor with RSI construction, attributed the increasing rate of abandoned projects in Lagos State to breach of agreement between the building contractors and their clients.
“Most abandoned buildings you see today are usually caused by breach of agreement which is mostly caused by our client.

“These clients would establish a contract with you at the beginning of the project but would not fulfil their part of the bargain at the very middle of the project.

“No one would expect a contractor to help his or her client to complete a building.”
Commenting on the abandoned building menace, Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Mr Jeje Bosun said that they are taking every step to stem the increase in abandoned buildings in Lagos and ensure the security of lives and properties of the residents.
