NUT Demand Compensation For Families Of Teachers Killed By Boko Haram in Borno, Yobe

At least 173 teachers were killed by the Islamiс terrorist group Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe states over the past year.

The statement was issued by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), during a one-day peaceful rally to the Government House, Bauchi, over the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok town of Borno. The national secretariat of the NUT had on May 21, ordered teachers in public schools nationwide, to boycott classes and participate in a protest, demanding the release of the abducted schoolgirls.

The Union demanded both federal and the respective state governments to render the necessary support to the relatives of the affected teachers and pay adequate compensation. It also asked to provide insurance cover for students and teachers as they have to study and teach in appalling conditions.


The teachers once again appealed to authorities with the request to take measures that will fundamentally change the situation of permanent fear and insecurity in the country. Speaking on the schoolgirls abduction, the state’s Chairman of the Union, Malam Danjuma Sale, stressed that this heinous act of violence was the worst attack over the years.

The Secretary to the state Government, Aminu Hammayo, who represented Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State thanked all the partcipants of the protest for their consciousness and cohesion. He also expressed his condolences to the families of 173 teachers who were killed by the terrorists and deplored the abduction in Chibok.

He assured that government at all levels are making all necessary efforts to address the situation, especially with the support of the international communities. And expressed strong belief in girls' speedy return home.
