This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, a copy obtained by Sahara Reporters.

Jonathan stated that the senators should know that there were other more pressing issues that should attract their attention instead of threatening to remove him from office.
The statement, however, did not reveal if President Jonathan considers that he has, or has not, committed any impeachable offence.

“The Senate in the last four years has conducted its legislative functions and responded to issues that are of great national importance with commendable political sagacity. In this same period, the senate has functioned as a stabilizing force within the polity employing much political maturity that is required to guide and protect our nascent democracy,” the statement read.
The President in the statement expressed strong trust and believes in the leadership of the present Senate and the unwavering patriotism and commitment that have been shown by the distinguished members.

It further expressed believe that ultimately it is the tendency towards true Nationalism that will prevail in the Senate.

“It is our view that there are at present, serious fundamental issues of National importance such as winning the war against terrorism and stabilizing the economy in the face of dwindling oil revenue which requires the full attention, commitment and swift action of distinguished members of the Senate. We are of the opinion that all matters political can and will be resolved politically in the overall interest of our democracy and the wellbeing of our people,” the statement read.

It would be recalled that some senators have reportedly threatened to impeach President Jonathan for working against their political interests in their various states. The plot quickly grew when it filtered into the Senate, as a growing number of lawmakers were said to have teamed up with some Reps to remove the President.

However, reactions have trailed the impeachment plot, recently, the leader of the South South Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Sunday Ekanem, threatened the All Progressive Congress (APC) that there would be crisis in the polity if the plan orchestrated to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan scales through.

Also, Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria (NCSN) had also warned members of the National Assembly against the purported plot to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan from office.
Meanwhile, Niger Delta former militants have also issued a dire warning to members of the House of Representatives over the alleged plot to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan.
