The woman was detained for harbouring pregnant girls and women for the purpose of selling their babies after birth after a tip off from members of the community, a claim the suspect refused.
“She said she is a retired midwife and she runs a maternity home that has no name and no certificate,” the state NSCDC deputy commandant, Ade Micheal said.
According to the search at the alleged maternity home which Esther Akunmadu opened around a year ago she had four women and two one-week babies in the premises.
The NSCDC chief supposed that the woman bribed his men with N100,000 which they collected but showed before journalists.
A 21-year old pregnant girl which was found at her alleged maternity home said that her mother took her to Mrs Akunmadu for treatment until the birth of her baby but the girl doesn’t khow about other agreements between arrested woman and her mom.
It is about the third time that a baby factory has been discovered in Imo State.
Baby factories are a big problem for Nigeria. They keep springing up all over Nigeria, particularly Eastern part, as fast as the law administration agencies are shutting down the discovered ones.
The recent case happened in Onitsha about a month ago. Anambra State Police Command arrested the holder of the baby factory for supposedly selling one of the new- born babies to yet-to-be identified person at Obosi for N700,000 without the agreement of his mother.
